Don and Ann Huckfeldt, longtime Napa Valley residents, created Igneous Wines in 2002 after they were able to secure some Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Thorevilos Vineyard, a vineyard owned and operated by David Abreu in St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain. Since that time, they have planted an estate vineyard at their ranch in Napa, which is also under the management of David Abreu. Kirk Venge is their winemaker – Kirk, born and raised in Napa Valley, has been recognized as one of the best new young winemakers in the world. Kirk followed in his father Nils’ footsteps, securing a degree in enology at the University of California, Davis.
Don has always had a passion for geology and especially volcanic rock formations – he owns a water-well drilling company, which has given him an appreciation for the composition of the soil and terroir of the Napa Valley. Therefore, “Igneous” seemed to be the perfect name for his wines.
